Coconut oil is a unique dietary fat composed primarily of medium-chain triglycerides (MCTs), particularly lauric acid (C12), which has documented antimicrobial activity against bacteria, viruses, and fungi. Unlike long-chain fatty acids, MCTs are rapidly metabolized to ketones by the liver, providing a quick energy source for the brain. Studies suggest potential benefits for Alzheimer's disease symptoms, skin health, and oral hygiene.
Coconut oil has been used throughout tropical Asia, the Pacific, and Africa for thousands of years as a primary cooking fat, skin and hair care product, and traditional medicine. In Ayurvedic medicine, coconut oil is used for oil pulling (kavala), massage (abhyanga), and as a base for medicinal preparations. Traditional Polynesian and Sri Lankan populations — who consumed large amounts of coconut fat — showed low rates of cardiovascular disease, sparking modern research interest.
The primary fatty acid — converted in the body to monolaurin, which disrupts the lipid membranes of bacteria, viruses (including HIV and herpes), and fungi. The most antimicrobially active fatty acid.
Medium-chain fatty acids rapidly converted to ketones by the liver. Caprylic acid has specific antifungal activity against Candida and other yeasts.
Clinical studies confirm coconut oil pulling reduces Streptococcus mutans count, plaque, and gingivitis. Two RCTs show comparable efficacy to chlorhexidine mouthwash for plaque reduction.
RCTs confirm virgin coconut oil superior to mineral oil for atopic dermatitis, reducing colonization by Staphylococcus aureus. Excellent emollient and barrier repair.
Monolaurin (from lauric acid) demonstrates broad-spectrum antimicrobial activity against gram-positive bacteria, enveloped viruses, and Candida in laboratory studies.
Take 1 tablespoon of virgin coconut oil, swish gently around the mouth for 15–20 minutes. Spit into trash (not drain — it solidifies). Rinse with warm water, then brush teeth.
Dosage: Once daily, ideally in the morning before eatingDo not swallow — oil contains bacteria accumulated during pulling. 15–20 minutes is the traditional and studied duration. Consistency over weeks yields the best results.
Apply virgin coconut oil directly to skin as a moisturizer, especially after bathing.
Dosage: Apply as needed 1–2 times dailyVirgin (unrefined, cold-pressed) is preferred over refined for medicinal topical use. Excellent for eczema, dry skin, and as a diaper rash barrier.
