Pipsissewa is a small evergreen plant native to North America and Eurasia, traditionally used by Indigenous peoples for urinary tract health and as a general tonic. The name comes from the Cree word 'pipsisikweu' meaning 'it breaks into small pieces,' referring to its traditional use for breaking up kidney stones.
Native American tribes, particularly the Cree and Ojibwe, used Pipsissewa extensively for urinary and kidney complaints, including kidney stones and bladder infections. It was also employed as a blood purifier, for rheumatism, and as a general tonic. European settlers adopted these uses, and the plant became official in the U.S. Pharmacopoeia from 1820 to 1916. Traditional herbalists valued it for its diuretic and antiseptic properties, often combining it with other urinary herbs.
