Overview

Spirulina is a unicellular blue-green microalgae that NASA selected for astronaut nutrition due to its extraordinary nutritional completeness. Contains 60–70% complete protein by dry weight (more than any other food), all essential amino acids, bioavailable iron, vitamin B12, gamma-linolenic acid (GLA), and phycocyanin — its unique blue pigment with anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties. One of Earth's most ancient organisms, used as food since the time of the Aztec.

Traditional Use

Spirulina has been consumed by humans for hundreds of years. The Aztec harvested it from Lake Texcoco — the Spanish conquistadores documented them collecting the lake scum and drying it into cakes called Tecuitlatl. In Chad, Lake Chad's Kanembu people collect spirulina (called Dihe) and have used it as a dietary staple for generations, maintaining remarkable health despite harsh desert conditions. NASA research in the 1980s validated its extraordinary nutritional density and established its role in space food research.

Key Active Compounds

C-Phycocyanin (Blue Pigment)

Unique protein-pigment complex found in blue-green algae. Potent antioxidant (free radical scavenger), anti-inflammatory (COX-2 inhibitor, NF-kB inhibitor), and has shown cancer cell apoptosis induction in multiple in-vitro studies.

Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA)

Rare omega-6 anti-inflammatory fatty acid. Spirulina is one of the few non-animal sources. Clinically used for eczema, PMS, and diabetic neuropathy.

Complete Protein Complex (65–70%)

The most protein-dense food known. All essential amino acids in high quality. Phycocyanin protein has specific beneficial properties beyond standard protein nutrition.

Evidence-Based Benefits

Nutritional Supplementation

Strong evidence

Extensively validated across multiple studies. The complete protein, iron, and B12 content makes spirulina uniquely valuable for vegan nutrition. Clinical trials in malnourished children in developing nations confirm rapid nutritional improvement.

Allergic Rhinitis

Moderate evidence

Multiple RCTs confirm spirulina significantly reduces allergic rhinitis symptoms — nasal discharge, sneezing, congestion, and itching — through inhibition of histamine release and IL-4 suppression.

Cholesterol and Cardiovascular

Moderate evidence

Meta-analysis of RCTs confirms significant reductions in total cholesterol, LDL, and triglycerides with spirulina supplementation (1–8g/day). Also reduces blood pressure in clinical studies.

Common Preparation Methods

Powder in Smoothie

Add 1–2 teaspoons (3–6g) of spirulina powder to a fruit smoothie.

Dosage: 3–10g daily

Strong flavor is masked by banana, mango, or mixed berries. Start with 1 teaspoon and work up. The vibrant green-blue color is dramatic in smoothies. Pair with vitamin C-containing fruits to enhance iron absorption.
