Overview

Shilajit is a mineral-rich resin that seeps from cracks in Himalayan, Altai, and Caucasian mountain rocks during summer — formed over millions of years from compressed decomposed plant matter. The ultimate fulvic acid source, containing 85+ minerals in ionic form and dibenzo-alpha-pyrones that enhance mitochondrial function. Considered in Ayurveda as the most powerful rejuvenating substance in the material world.

Traditional Use

Shilajit has been the cornerstone rejuvenating substance (Rasayana) in Ayurvedic medicine for over 3,000 years. The Charaka Samhita states 'there is no curable disease which cannot be controlled with the help of Shilajit.' In Ayurveda, it is classified as a yogavahi — an enhancer that increases the potency and delivery of any herb or substance it is combined with. Also used in Persian medicine (Mumiye), Tibetan medicine (Bragshun), and Siberian folk medicine for bone healing, energy, and longevity.

Key Active Compounds

Fulvic Acid (>60% of Shilajit)

The most important compound — facilitates cellular nutrient delivery by making minerals and bioactives more bioavailable and helping them penetrate cell membranes. Also chelates heavy metals and environmental toxins. Supports mitochondrial ATP production.

Dibenzo-alpha-pyrones and Fulvic Acid Conjugates

Unique compounds that enhance mitochondrial Coenzyme Q10 activity, increase ATP production, and protect mitochondria from oxidative damage. Primary energy-enhancing mechanism.

85+ Ionic Minerals

Virtually every trace mineral required by the human body in ionic (most bioavailable) form, including zinc, selenium, manganese, copper, and iron.

Evidence-Based Benefits

Energy and Mitochondrial Function

Some studies

Clinical studies show shilajit reduces fatigue, improves mitochondrial function, and increases CoQ10 activity. Particularly studied for chronic fatigue syndrome.

Testosterone and Male Fertility

Some studies

Clinical trials show processed shilajit (processed Mumio) significantly increases total and free testosterone, DHEA-S, and improves sperm parameters in infertile men.

Cognitive Function

Some studies

Animal studies and emerging human data show improvements in cognitive markers. Fulvic acid may inhibit tau protein aggregation relevant to Alzheimer's.

Common Preparation Methods

Purified Shilajit Resin

Use only laboratory-tested, purified shilajit resin from reputable source. Dissolve a rice-grain to pea-sized amount (150–500mg) in warm water, milk, or honey.

Dosage: 150–500mg purified resin daily

CRITICAL: ONLY use purified, heavy metal-tested shilajit from reputable suppliers. Raw shilajit contains dangerous levels of heavy metals and needs processing. Look for Certificates of Analysis confirming heavy metal testing. Best taken in warm milk with ashwagandha (traditional preparation).
