IMPORTANT: Henbane is a HIGHLY TOXIC plant included here for educational and historical purposes only. DO NOT USE. Henbane contains tropane alkaloids (hyoscyamine, scopolamine) that cause severe poisoning, hallucinations, seizures, and death. Historically used in witchcraft, medieval medicine, and as a poison, henbane has no safe modern medicinal use. All parts of the plant are extremely dangerous.
Henbane has a dark history spanning thousands of years. Ancient Greeks used it as a poison and anesthetic. Roman physicians used it cautiously for pain and insomnia. Medieval witches allegedly used henbane in "flying ointments" for its hallucinogenic effects. It was used in medieval medicine for toothaches and as a surgical anesthetic, but caused many deaths. The Oracle of Delphi may have inhaled henbane fumes. By the 19th century, safer alternatives replaced henbane in medicine.

A tropane alkaloid with similar effects to hyoscyamine; causes severe central nervous system depression, delirium, and respiratory failure.
Present in smaller amounts; contributes to overall toxicity.
